Spartans Clinch Second Seed at MW Tournament With Sweep of Fresno State

SAN JOSE, Calif.—Amethyst Harper and Haylee Nelson led the Spartans in kills Thursday night as the San José State volleyball team swept Fresno State, 3-0, en route to the team's 20th win of the season and clinching the second seed at next week's Mountain West Tournament.

  • Harper had a hot hitting night as she recorded 13 kills on 24 attempts and no errors for a .542 percentage. She also had seven digs and a block assist.
  • Nelson added 12 kills and hit .375 for the match. She tied her career-high with five service aces to lead the team.
  • Nelson now has exactly 1,400 kills in her Spartan career and needs 26 to move into fifth place.
  • Sarah Smevog led the Spartans with 14 digs and inched closer to ninth all-time in MW history. She ends the night with 1,681 career digs and needs just two more to tie for ninth.
  • With the win, San José State is now 20-7 on the season and 14-3 in the MW. The Spartans reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since the 2001 season when that team finished 25-8.
  • The 14 conference wins also sets a school record for the most conference wins by any SJSU team. No team had won more than 13 conference matches in a season.
  • The Spartans also clinched the second seed for the Mountain West Tournament and the best finish for SJSU in MW play since joining the conference in 2013.
  • As the second seed, San José State has a bye into the semifinals and plays the winner of the 3/6 match on Thursday, November 24, at 1 p.m. MT/12 p.m. PT.
