SPARTANS OPEN MW TOURNAMENT PLAY ON THURSDAY IN SEMIFINALS: The San José State volleyball team enters the 2022 Mountain West Volleyball Tournament inside Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo. The team enters the tournament as the second seed after finishing conference play at 14-4, and have a bye in the quarterfinals. SJSU will play the winner of the third-seed Colorado State/sixth-seed San Diego State match on Thursday at 4 p.m. MT/3 p.m. PT. The championship match will be played Friday at 6:30 p.m. MT, with the winner earning the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Head coach Tom Hilbert is in his 26th and final season at the Ram program after announcing his retirement earlier this month.
ABOUT SAN DIEGO STATE: The Aztecs enter the tournament with a 10-19 overall record and claimed the final tournament on Saturday with a 3-1 win over the Spartans to finish the MW season with an 8-10 record. Head coach Brent Hilliard is in his third year at the helm of the program.
BUMP, SET, SPIKE
- The Spartans have just one win in the 12 times the team has played a match in Fort Collins or Moby Arena. That win came in October of this year when San José State needed five sets to defeat Colorado State. Other than that, the closest SJSU came to winning was in 1987 when the Spartans lost 3-1 to the Rams.
- San José State is 0-1 in the history of participating at the Mountain West Volleyball Tournament. The Spartans were the No. 3 seed last year and fell to the sixth seed and eventual champion, Boise State, 3-0.
- Four is the popular number for the Spartans this season. Of the 28 matches played this season, San José State has played 17 four-set matches. The Spartans have a 13-4 record in those matches.
- For the fourth time this season, Sarah Smevog has been named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week. This is her ninth recognition earned in her career. Against Fresno State and San Diego State, Smevog averaged 5.86 digs, 1.29 assists and 0.43 aces per set. She had her best defensive match of the year with 27 digs, the 26th match in her career with 20 or more digs, against San Diego State in her final match inside Spartan Gym. She added a team-high three service aces against the Aztecs. Smevog started the weekend with 14 digs and four assists in a sweep of Fresno State
- The Spartans recorded 20 wins for the first time in over 20 years. The last time the program recorded 20+ wins was 2001 when the team made the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the second round, defeating Santa Clara, 3-2, before falling to eventual national champion Stanford, 3-0.

- 1986 13-5 PCAA
- 2000 13-3 WAC
- 2021 13-5 Mountain West
- 2022 14-4 Mountain West
- The Spartans finished second in the Mountain West with a 14-4 record. The program has not had a second-place finish in any conference since three consecutive seasons in 1999, 2000 and 2001 when the Spartans finished second each season in the Western Athletic Conference.
- San José State finishes the regular season with a 9-1 home record, tying for the best finish at home. The best record prior to this year was the 1986 season when SJSU finished the home schedule with a 14-1 record, the season with a 28-7 record and went 1-1 in the NCAA Tournament. Last year's team finished with a 10-2 mark at home.
