Spartan Volleyball Advances To MW Championship Match

FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Haylee Nelson and Blaire Fleming anchored the Spartan offense as the San José State volleyball team advanced to the championship match of the 2022 Mountain West Tournament with a 3-1 win over sixth-seed San Diego State Thursday evening inside Moby Arena on the campus of Colorado State University.
 

  • Nelson led the Spartan hitters with 11 kills and hit .318 for the match (11-4-22), her 19th double-figure kills match of the season.
  • With her 11 kills, Nelson moved into a tie for fifth place on the San José State career kills list. She now has 1,426 kills, tying with Dawnis Wilson
  • Blaire Fleming hit .348 for the four sets with 10 kills on 23 attempts and only two errors. She added three digs and three block assists in the win.
  • Sarah Smevog led a trio of Spartans with double-figure digs. She had 16 digs, followed by Letizia Cammillucci with 11 and Amethyst Harper with 10.
  • San José State got contributions from everyone. Yazmin Pitpit came off the bench to lead the team in blocks with five. Madeline Boerstra hit .308 with seven kills.
  • The tough service of the Spartans produced 11 aces for the match, led by Harper and Carly Aigner-Swesey with three each.
  • The Spartans advance to the MW championship match for the first time in school history. The program has not played in a championship match since the 2003 season when SJSU fell to Hawaii, 3-0, in the finals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament held in Reno, Nev.
  • San José State will face fourth-seed Utah State for the championship on Friday. The teams split the two meetings this year, each winning on their homecourt. The Spartans won 3-1 in September, and the teams played almost three hours earlier this month before the Aggies won in five.
