ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The No. 3 seed San José State women's soccer team won the Mountain West Championship on Saturday night by defeating the No.1 seed Wyoming in penalty kicks after a scoreless 110 minutes. Bente Pernot made two saves in the penalty shootout to clinch the victory and lead the Spartans to a berth in the 2022 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship.
- Pernot was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
- Pernot is the first freshman goalkeeper to win the tournament's Most Valuable Player since 2015 when Spartans goalkeeper Paige Simoneau accomplished the feat.
- Pernot is the first freshman goalkeeper in Mountain West history to be named the Newcomer of the Year and the Mountain West Tournament Most Valuable Player in the same season.
- Pernot, Kiana Miyazato, Taylor Phillips and Jada Wilson all made the All-Tournament Team.
- The Spartans qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in program history and the first time since 2018.
- Coach Tina Estrada becomes the first head coach in Spartans history to lead the team to the NCAA Tournament in their first season in charge since Tamie Grimes in 2000.
- In the match, Pernot made four saves.
- The Spartans outshot Wyoming, 18-14.
