Chip Viney Named San Jose State Football Defensive Backs Coach

SAN JOSE, Calif.----- After the last four years at the University of Oklahoma, Chip Viney (pronounced VIE-knee) joins the San Jose State University football staff as the new defensive backs coach. Brent Brennan, the Spartans head coach, made the announcement.

"Coach Viney  has incredible energy. He's got a really unique experience. He's a California guy. He's familiar with the state, this area, and our conference. I can't wait for him to join us," said Brennan.

Viney had various roles with Sooner football over two tenures. The most recent stint was from 2018 through 2021 when he served in recruiting and team defense analyst roles. For the 2021 season, he was the director of player development and scouting analyst.

The Fresno, Calif., native also spent 2013 through 2016 at Oklahoma as a graduate assistant working with cornerbacks his first three seasons and was the Sooners' 2016 special teams analyst.

In his eight seasons with Oklahoma football, the Sooners won five Big 12 Conference championships and participated in the 2018 and 2019 College Football Playoffs, and the 2013 Bowl Championship Series (BCS).

"I get to do what I love which is developing young men on and off the field. I learned a lot and was exposed to great coaching and great coaches. Now, putting my thumbprint in a room of young men and on their lives is a great opportunity for me," said Viney, who worked for Bob Stoops and Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma and Jay Norvell at Nevada.

In between his two tenures at Oklahoma, Viney was at the University of Nevada in 2017 coaching cornerbacks.

The 2010 UCLA graduate majored in history. As Courtney Viney, he earned letter awards for the 2008, 2009, and 2010 Bruin teams and was named its scout team player of the year as a freshman. Viney completed his college career at New Mexico State in 2011. He then played one season of Arena Football for the 2012 San Jose SaberCats.

Viney began his coaching career in 2012 as the defensive backs coach at Central East High in Fresno, Calif.

He and his wife, Whitney, a 2010 San Jose State graduate, are the parents of two daughters, Milan and Brooklyn.
