PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif.—Lucia Lopez Ortega shot a two-under 69 Sunday in the first round of the Therese Herrion Regional Challenge to lead the third-ranked San José State women's golf team to a tie for second place at the par-71 Palos Verdes Golf Club.

- The Spartans shot a two-over 286 on Sunday and are tied for second with No. 1 Stanford and No. 35 and host Ohio State. The three teams are four shots behind No. 18 Baylor who shot a two-under 282.
- Lopez Ortega made five birdies and 10 pars during her round. She is tied for first on par-4 scoring at two-under.
- Antonia Malate shot an even-par 71, and is tied for 13th. She finished her final eight hole at two-under par with back-to-back birdies on #15 and #16.
- Kajsa Arwefjäll and Louisa Carlbom each shot a two-over 72 and are tied for 27th. Arwefjäll made two birdies and 13 pars, while Carlbom made an eagle on the par-5, 453-yard #16.
- Rebecca Gyllner rounded out the scoring with a seven-over 78, finishing her round with a birdie on #18.
- The field consists of 10 teams ranked in the top-25 of the Golfstat rankings.
- The Spartans lead the field in pars made with 61 and are one of three teams to make an eagle in the first round.
UP NEXT – The Spartans begin second-round play Monday morning at 10:12 a.m. The Spartans will play with Baylor, Stanford and Ohio State.
