SAN JOSE, Calif. - After a successful trip to Los Angeles where San José State baseball took two out of three games against Loyola Marymount, the Spartans are back home Monday afternoon for the team's home opener against Cal Poly. First pitch of the one-game showdown is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.

  • LHP Ethan Ross gets the ball as the pitcher for the Spartans and will make his first appearance of 2023. In 2022, he threw 61.2 innings and finished eighth in the conference with 63 strikeouts.
  • The Spartans first baseman, Hunter Dorraugh, enters the matchup on a recent tear after hitting 8-13 in the series against Loyola Marymount. His 14 total bases are the most in the Mountain West this season.
  • After the first series of the season, Dorraugh has the second-best batting average in the Mountain West at .615. Two other Spartans rank in the top 15, Jack Colette is eighth at .462 and Dalton Bowling is 12th at .444.
  • The Spartans rank second in the conference in RBI's (19) and doubles (8).
  • Pitching wise, the Spartans dominated in the series against Loyola Marymount. They had the best performance by a Mountain West pitching staff in terms of opposing batting average as the Lions hit only .220.

VS. CAL POLY

  • The Cal Poly Mustangs enter the contest with the same record as the Spartans after going 2-1 against Missouri State on the weekend.
  • All time, the Spartans hold the advantage over the Mustangs, 52-45-1.
  • The Spartans are looking for their second consecutive win over Cal Poly after defeating the Mustangs 3-1 last season, on March 8, 2022.
    • Ross was the winning pitcher of the game thanks to a scoreless inning of relief in which he struck out two batters.
    • Colette got the game-winning two-run RBI double in the sixth inning.
