Spartans Take Game 1 Against San Diego State, Game 2 Suspended Due to Rain

—Robert Hamchuk went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs while Matt Spear went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the San José State baseball team (6-5, 3-0 Mountain West) in a 7-4 win over San Diego State (4-8, 2-2 Mountain West) in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The second game of the doubleheader was suspended after three innings due to rain with the Spartans leading, 2-0.

  • Left-handed pitcher Jack White earned his team-leading third win of the season by pitching 3.0 scoreless innings in relief, allowing only one hit and striking out four.
  • Right-handed pitcher Jonathan Clark started the game and tossed 6.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out six.
  • With the 3-for-5 game, Hamchuk continued his recent hot streak. The Spartans' left fielder has hit 8-for-16 over his previous three games.
  • For Spear, his home run was a two-run shot to tie the game at 4-4 in the seventh inning. The home run was the first of his career.
  • Theo Hardy had two hits.
  • Jack Colette registered his team-leading third stolen base of the season.
  • Dalton Bowling produced a 2-RBI single in the eighth inning.

UP NEXT: Game two of the series will resume on Saturday at 3 p.m. The series finale will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended game.
