SAN JOSE, Calif.—Winners of four of their last five games, the San José State baseball team returns home this week for a Wednesday afternoon showdown against Saint Mary's.

PREVIOUS GAME

  • Two of the three games against San Diego State on the weekend had to be postponed because of rain and poor field conditions at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego.
  • The Spartans won the first game of the series 7-4 and were leading 2-0 in top of the fourth inning in the second game before it was called due to rain.
  • As a result of the postponement, the two teams will resume play in game two of the series as well as play game three when San Diego State travels to Northern California in May.
  • In the 7-4 win, left-handed pitcher Jack White earned his team-leading third win of the season by pitching 3.0 scoreless innings in relief, allowing only one hit and striking out four.
  • Robert Hamchuk and Matt Spear led the Spartans offensively as Hamchuk went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs while Spear went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.

THIS SEASON

  • Three Spartans rank in the top 10 in the Mountain West Conference in ERA. White leads the conference with an ERA of 0.79 while LHP Micky Thompson and RHP Jonathan Clark are fifth and 10th with respective ERA's of 2.40 and 3.68.
  • White is also first in the conference in wins with three and opposing batting average, limiting opponents to an average of only .132.
  • As a team, the Spartans lead the conference in opposing batting average (.222).
  • On offense, the Spartans have been led by the co-leaders in the conference in doubles, Hunter Dorraugh and Charles McAdoo. SJSU's first baseman and second baseman have each notched six doubles.
  • After a slow start to the season, Robert Hamchuk, the team's leader in batting average in 2022 (.378), has come alive of late. In three games last week, the Spartans' left fielder went 8-for-16 with three doubles, five RBIs and one home run. In recognition of his performances, he was named the Mountain West Player of the Week.

VS. SAINT MARY'S

  • The Saint Mary's Gaels are 4-9 this season and are coming off a split against Xavier on Saturday.
  • The Spartans are 102-54 all-time in series against the Gaels.
  • The last time the two sides faced off was on March 3, 2020 when the Gaels earned a 4-2 victory.
  • Dalton Bowling led the Spartans in the contest with an RBI double.

UP NEXT: The Spartans will host Air Force on the weekend. The first game is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. on Friday, March 17.
