For the first time in school history, the San José State men's basketball program will play a second game in the postseason after winning its first round game over Southern Indiana, 77-52, Saturday afternoon at the Discount Tire College Basketball Invitational at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. SJSU now faces No. 10-seed Radford in a quarterfinal game on Monday. If the Spartans are victorious, they will face the winner of Charlotte-Milwaukee in a semifinal game Tuesday night.

San José State enters the game with a 21-13 overall record and finished Mountain West play with a 10-8 record, good for fifth in the standings and behind four teams that are/were playing in the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans are making their second appearance at the Discount Tires CBI after playing in the tournament in 2011, and fell at Creighton 85-74.


ABOUT NO. 10 RADFORD:  The Highlanders enter Monday night's game with a 20-14 overall record and finished 12-6 in the Big South. The team defeated Tarleton in the first round of CBI, 72-70 in overtime on Sunday. Head coach Darris Nichols is in his second season at the helm of the program. DaQuan Smith leads the team in scoring at 14.0 points per game, while Bryan Antoine is second on the team in scoring at 11.2 ppg.


HISTORIC WIN ON SATURDAY: The 77-52 win over Southern Indiana Saturday in the first round of the Discount Tire CBI gave the Spartans their first postseason win in six tries in school history. The Spartans had lost three times in the NCAA Tournament and once in the NIT and the CBI.

Alvaro Cardenas led the team with a career-best 22 points, while MW Player of the Year Omari Moore added 15 points and dished out six assists. Robert Vaihola came off the bench to score 10 points and led the team with nine rebounds. In all, 11 players scored for the Spartans.

SJSU POSTSEASON HISTORY: This marks the second time San José State has participated in the CBI. The Spartans played in the 2011 CBI as the team lost at Creighton, 85-74. It is just the sixth postseason appearance for the Spartans in school history.

COACH MILES - FORMER PLAYERS COACHING IN THE CBI: Two former players of Spartan head coach Tim Miles are on coaching staffs at the Discount Tire CBI.
Aaron Fearne is the Associate Head Coach at Charlotte. He played for Coach Miles on his first two teams at Mayville State, 1995-96 and 1996-97.
Flynn Clayman is the Interim Head Coach at Southern Utah. He played two seasons for Coach Miles at Colorado State, 2007-08 and 2008-09, the first two years of Miles' tenure at CSU.

20 WINS TAKES THE SPARTANS TO NEW HEIGHTS: The Spartans recorded 20 wins this season for the first time since 1980-81 season when the team had a 22-9 record. The program has only won 18 or more games nine times since 1937-38.
