Emilia Sjostrand Named Co-Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year

SAN JOSE, Calif.— San José State's Emilia Sjostrand has been named Co-Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year, announced by the conference on Wednesday. Sjostrand is the first All-American woman in SJSU program history and also the first to compete in the NCAA Indoor Championships.

  • Sjostrand finished seventh in the nation in the Women's Triple Jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships and was named an All-American for her efforts
  • The sophomore also finished 11th in the Women's Long Jump event held on Day One of the NCAA Indoor Championships
  • Named Women's Most Outstanding Performer of the Meet at Mountain West Indoor Championships for winning the MW title in both Women's Long and Triple Jump
  • Earned All-MW selection in Women's Triple Jump and Long Jump
  • Sjostrand set the school record for the Women's Triple Jump and the Women's Long Jump with marks of 13.98m (45'10.5") and 6.48m (21'3.25")
  • Sjostrand set a school record on her first official jump of the NCAA Indoor Championships with a mark of 13.93m (45'8.5"). Not 20 minutes later, she broke her own record by submitting a 13.98m (45'10.5") jump
  • Four of Sjostrand's five jumps at the NCAA Indoor Championships would have broken the former SJSU Women's Triple Jump record of 13.71m (44'11.75"), with the sophomore also submitting 13.77m (45'2.25") and 13.87m (45'6.25") marks. Sjostrand's last jump of the event tied the previous school record that she also set at the Mountain West Indoor Championships
  • Sjostrand became both the first woman in SJSU Track & Field history to qualify for an NCAA Indoor Championship and be named an All-American in a matter of two weeks
  • The sophomore holds the top seven Women's Triple Jump performance marks in school history including the all-time school record at 13.98m (45'10.5")
  • Sjostrand owns the No. 2 all-time Triple Jump mark from home country of Sweden (13.98m)
  • Named MW Women's Athlete of the Week twice (weeks of Jan. 17 and Jan. 31)
  • First place in Women's Triple Jump at Spokane Indoor Invitational
  • First place in Women's Long Jump at Wesley A. Brown Invitational
  • First place in Women's Triple Jump at UNM Indoor Open

UP NEXT: Sjostrand is currently in the early days of her outdoor season, and most recently won the Women's Triple Jump at the Stanford Cardinal Classic with a school outdoor record-setting mark of 13.92m (45'8") on March 18. She will next compete at the Aztec Invitational on March 24 and 25.
