SAN JOSE, Calif.—Coming off a 23-2 thumping of the University of San Francisco on Tuesday afternoon, San José State baseball hits the road this weekend for a three-game series against San Diego State. The Spartans will play a doubleheader on Friday afternoon and wrap up the series with one game on Saturday. The series had to be moved to San Diego due to rain in the Bay Area.

PREVIOUS GAME

  • In Tuesday's win over San Francisco, the Spartans registered the most runs they have scored in a game since May 15, 2022.
  • Left-handed pitcher Ethan Ross set the tone on the mound as the Spartans' starter, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings, striking out nine and allowing no walks.
  • LHP Jesse Gutierrez, RHP Joey Cammarata and RHP Cade Cushing combined to pitch four scoreless innings in relief.
  • Dalton Bowling and Robert Hamchuk led the way for the Spartans offensively as both players had three hits.

THIS SEASON

  • The Spartans have had superb starting pitching this season. Two Spartan starters rank in the top five in ERA in the Mountain West Conference as LHP Micky Thompson is third with an ERA of 2.40 and Jonathan Clark is fifth with an ERA of 2.81.
  • The Spartans have allowed only 72 hits and 41 runs this season which are the fewest hits and runs allowed by any Mountain West team in 2023.
  • Opponents are hitting only .225 against SJSU as the Spartans lead the conference in opposing batting average.
  • On offense, the Spartans have been led by the co-leaders in the conference in doubles, Hunter Dorraugh and Charles McAdoo. SJSU's first baseman and second baseman have each notched six doubles.

VS SAN DIEGO STATE

  • The San Diego State Aztecs are on a two-game losing streak following losses to UNLV and UC Riverside.
  • The Spartans have an all-time record of 24-64 in series against the Aztecs.
  • In 2022, the Spartans swept the Aztecs in two separate series, winning all six games against their Southern California foe.
  • Clark tossed 10.1 innings against San Diego State in 2022 as the starting pitcher for two of the six games. He was dominant in both appearances, surrendering no runs on only six hits while striking out 12.
