Shetler Leads SJSU on Day Two of 76th Western Intercollegiate

DAY 2 RESULTS

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -
Caleb Shetler carded five birdies to post a 1-under 69, while Carl Corpus finished at even-par with four birdies to lead the San José State men's golf team on day two of the 76th Western Intercollegiate, presented by Titleist, at Pasatiempo Golf Club on Tuesday. The Spartans finished with a score of 361 for a two-day total of 715 (+15) and are in a tie for 10th place with USC, three shots behind No. 17 Arizona and six ahead of No. 32 Washington.

Pepperdine tallied an 18-hole Western Intercollegiate team record score of 22-under 328, shattering North Carolina's previous record of 10-under 340 (Round 2) in 2018. The Waves' 36-hole score of 673 (-27) is a new Western Intercollegiate record and they are currently 23 shots better than their 4-under par winning score of 1,050 in 2021. The last three Western Intercollegiate champions have gone on to win the NCAA national championship (Stanford, 2019 / No tourney in 2020 due to Covid / Pepperdine, 2021 / Texas, 2022).

Pepperdine's Sam Choi (66-65) and Oregon's Owen Avrit (65-66) share the lead after 36 holes with a 9-under 131, and hold a one-shot lead over the Waves' Derek Hitchner (68-64=132). Roberto Nieves from Pepperdine matched the tournament 18-hole record with a 63 (-7) this afternoon, bouncing back after a 77 yesterday. Nieves is the second player this week to card a tournament record 63, joining Cal's Aaron Du who posted a 63 in the first round.

Oregon tallied a 2-over score of 352 and is currently in second place at 13-under 687. BYU joined Pepperdine as the other team under par in the second round, posting a 10-under 340 to climb the leaderboard to third place with an overall score of 692 (-8). Cal is currently in fourth place with a score of 696 (-4), two shots ahead of No. 8 Stanford (698) in fifth place.

  • Zubair Firdaus carded a 2-over 72 and is in a tie for 42nd place with Shetler at 143 (+3)
