Spartans Place 10th at 76th Western Intercollegiate

DAY 3 RESULTS

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.
—Carl Corpus shot a one-over 71 to lead the San José State men's golf team on the third day of the 76th Western Intercollegiate, presented by Titleist, at Pasatiempo Golf Club on Wednesday. Corpus carded an even-par 210 (69-70-71) for the tournament to tie for 14th. As a team, the Spartans registered a score of 375 (+25) on the day for a three-day total of 1,090 (+40). SJSU finished in 10th place, 10 shots behind No. 17 Arizona and three ahead of No. 32 Washington. 
 


Pepperdine won the tournament with a score of 1,034 (-16) after shooting 361 (+11) on the final day. The Waves finished nine strokes better than the runners-up Oregon Ducks and won the team title for the second time in three years. The last three Western Intercollegiate champions have gone on to win the NCAA national championship (Stanford, 2019 / No tourney in 2020 due to Covid / Pepperdine, 2021 / Texas, 2022). 
 


Pepperdine's Derek Hitchner (68-64-71) earned the championship blue jacket, winning medalist honors with a score of 203 (-7). He bested Yuki Moriyama of UNLV (68-67-69=204) and Owen Avrit of Oregon (65-66-73=204) by one stroke. Greyson Leach of Oregon carded the low score of the day at two-under 68 to finish in a tie for 16th. 

  • Caleb Shetler recorded a score of 3-over 73 for a tournament total of 216 (+6). He finished in a tie for 31st place.
  • Zubair Firdaus fired a 7-over 77 for a three-day score of 220 (+10) and tied for 55th.
  • Corpus finished the tournament leading the field in par-3 scoring at 2.87.
  • Shetler and Kristopher Stiles tied for eighth in par-5 scoring at 4.44.

NEXT UP: The Spartans will head to Tucson, Ariz. for the Mountain West Tournament, April 28-30.
