FRESNO, Calif. – Reina Zermeno hit a two-out two-run double in extra innings and Ashley Rico hit a two-run double to lead San José State (19-21, 7-7 MW) in a 5-3 game one win and a 2-1 game two win at Fresno State (16-23, 5-6 MW) to sweep a doubleheader at Margie Wright Diamond in Fresno, Calif. Wednesday night.
It is the Spartans first regular season sweep over the Bulldogs since joining the Mountain West Conference.
In game one, the Spartans went to extra innings for the first time this season and Zermeno hit a two-out two-run double in the top of the ninth inning to give the Spartans a commanding 5-3 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
In game two, Rico hit a two-run double in the top of the fourth inning to make it 2-0 and the Spartans held on from there while Fresno State left nine on base.
GAME 1
- Zermeno extended her hit streak to nine games and has hits in 15 of her last 17 games overall
- Ahmiya Noriega went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and a triple
- It was Ah. Noriega's first game since April 1st
- Alyssa Graham hit a double and extended her on-base streak to a season team best 21 games
- Jillian Figueroa hit an RBI single to give the Spartans a late lead going into the seventh inning
- Makenzie Hutchinson had an RBI, a double and nine putouts
- Jenessa Ullegue went 7.0 IP while striking out six, giving up four hits and two earned runs on the way to her 10th win of the season
- Ullegue had two hits with her fifth double of the season
GAME 2
- Rico has seven doubles and 15 RBIs on the season
- Ullegue hit her sixth double of the season and scored a run
- Ah. Noriega went 2-for-3 with a double
- Ah. Noriega ended the day going 4-for-6 with two doubles, a triple and two runs scored
- Lacie Ham went 7.0 IP with six strikeouts and one run on the way to her sixth win of the season
- It was Ham's third complete game of the season
- Adrianna Noriega scored a run
- Zermeno's hit streak ended at nine games
- Graham's on-base streak ended at 21 games
UP NEXT: The Spartans host MW leading Boise State on Saturday and Sunday with first pitch on Saturday set for 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at noon. Both games can be seen on the Mountain West Network.
