Malate Tied for First, Spartans Second After First Round of MW Championship

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif.—Spartans Antonia Malate and Kajsa Arwefjäll finished the day in the top-five individually after both shot under-par rounds and helped No. 10 San José State shoot under par for the first round of the 2023 Mountain West Championship being played at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

  • Malate is tied for the lead at 4-under 68, her best round shot at the MW Championship in her career.
  • Malate made five consecutive birdies on holes 8-12, and leads the field in birdies made with seven.
  • She was just one of two players to birdie the par-4, 388-yard 12th hole.
  • Arwefjäll shot a 2-under 70 and is tied for fourth, shooting her career-best round at the championship.
  • She started the round strong, making birdies on four of her first nine holes to sit at 4-under at the turn and made seven pars and two bogeys over the final nine holes to finish at 70.
  • Louisa Carlbom shot a 1-over 73 and is tied for 17th. She made five birdies on the day and leads the field in par-4 scoring at -4.
  • Lucia Lopez Ortega and Rebecca Gyllner each shot a 3-over 75, and are tied for 29th. Lopez Ortega made three birdies on the day, while Gyllner made two birdies and finished her round with five pars and a birdie.
  • San José State shot a 2-under 286 and are second after the first round, just one shot behind leader New Mexico.
  • The Spartans lead the field in birdies made with 21 and in par-4 scoring at -9.

 
San José State begins second-round play Wednesday at 8:30 a.m., with New Mexico and Boise State.
