TUCSON, Ariz. – Zubair Firdaus had his best round of the season as San José State sits in fifth place alone after the first round of the Mountain West Championship.

  • Firdaus shot an opening-round 66 (-6) and is tied with three others atop the individual leaderboard.
  • The Spartans shot a team score of 279 (-9), their fourth-lowest team score of the season.
  • Kotaro Murata (70, -2) and Kristopher Stiles (71) join Firdaus with under-par rounds.
  • Firdaus's 4-under-par 32 on the back nine included a stretch of four-straight birdies on holes 14-17.
  • The sophomore is tied for first in total birdies with eight. He is also second in the field in par-3 scoring, shooting -2 on the short holes and averaging 2.5 strokes per hole.
  • The Spartans shot -11 as a team on the par 5's, averaging 4.45 strokes per hole, which is second in the field.
  • SJSU combined for 26 birdies, tied for first in the field.
