SAN DIEGO - No. 4 seed San José State softball (23-26, 11-11 MW) plays No. 5 seed Fresno State (23-30, 10-12 MW) at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday in the first game of the 2023 Mountain West Championship tournament in San Diego, Calif. from SDSU Softball Stadium and it can be seen on the Mountain West Network. The first game is single-elimination and then it's double-elimination afterwards. If the Spartans win, they'll play No. 1 seed Boise State at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.

  • The Spartans enter their first MW Conference softball tournament with their best conference record since 2019 and they swept Fresno State on the road in a doubleheader earlier this season.
  • The Spartans were the MW Champions in 2017 by having the best regular season conference record. This is the first MW softball championship tournament since 2006.
  • Jenessa Ullegue has 107 strikeouts this season which is good for fifth in the conference and is tied for first in the conference with 14 wins. Ullegue went over 100 strikeouts in a season for the third time in her career.
  • Ullegue has 373 career strikeouts and is only the sixth SJSU pitcher to go over 300 strikeouts in her career. Corina Lilly is fifth on the SJSU all-time list with 376 career strikeouts. 
  • Ullegue also has a .226 batting average against which is good for fifth best in the MW.
  • Ullegue has gone 7.0 IP or more seven times this season including pitching two one-hitters where both hits happened in the seventh inning.
  • Ullegue earned her second All-Mountain West First Team honor on Wednesday.
  • Karizma Bergesen hit .667 (6-for-9) with a home run, a double, five RBIs, two runs scored and posted a 1.111 slugging pct. with a .700 on-base pct. and added 10 putouts over the three-game series against UNLV (4/21-23).
  • The Spartans have let up only 16 home runs this season which is good for best in the Mountain West.
  • Lacie Ham (110) and Ullegue (107) are ranked fourth and fifth in the Mountain West in strikeouts.
  • Freshman Ahmiya Noriega went 4-for-6 with two doubles, a triple and two runs scored against FS (4/12 in a doubleheader) in her first games back since April 1st. She is fifth in the conference with three triples this season. 
  • Alyssa Graham hit two home runs against Colorado State (4/6-8) including a game changing grand slam (has two grand slams this season) and has eight home runs to lead the Spartans. The SJSU record is 13 in a season by Brittany McConnell in 2008. 
  • Graham earned her second All-Mountain West Second Team honor on Wednesday.
  • Freshman Reina Zermeno has only struck out 10 times (132 at-bats) this season which is good for fifth best in the conference and leads everyone in the MW who has over 100 at-bats.
