SAN JOSE, Calif.—Six incoming freshmen will join the San José State women's soccer team for the 2023 season. The six players include Ava Bynes, Drew Novaes, Sophia Memory, Nikayla Sullivan, Hope Northrup and Bailey Moseley.
Ava Bynes / Forward/Midfielder / San Marcos, Calif. / San Marcos High School
- Recorded the most assists in San Marcos High School history
- Named the Offensive Player of the Year and the Playmaker of the Year
- Named to the ODP Cal South Team
- Member of the ECNL Southwest 1st Team All-Conference
- Selected to the US Club Soccer ID2 ODP National Camp at the Olympic Training Center
- Selected to the ECNL Conference Selection Program (CSP)
- Served as team captain for the DMCV Sharks 05 ECNL Team
- Selected to the International Prospect Academy (IPA) with whom she trained and competed internationally in Spain against Real Madrid, Valencia, and Villareal
- Played as a starter for four years on San Marcos High School women's varsity soccer team
- Served as team captain for back-to-back state finalists
- Named to the Second-Team All League

Drew Novaes / Goalkeeper / West Sacramento, Calif. / River City High School
- Honored as a four-time Varsity Award and two-time Captains Award recipient in high school
- Named the Defensive MVP
- Named to the Metro All-League Team
- Won the Most Motivational Award
- Competed for Davis Legacy Soccer Club
- Why she chose SJSU: "I chose SJSU because of the very welcoming staff and players. It fit my educational and athletic goals and I love the pretty campus."
- Head Coach Tina Estrada: "Drew is a talented, assertive, and aggressive goalkeeper with good distribution. She will fit in well with our current goalkeepers and I look forward to her adding to the competitiveness of that environment."
Sophia Memory / Center Midfielder / Vista, Calif. / Mission Vista High School
- Scouted and invited to youth national team trainings for every season from 2016-2020
- Helped her team win the 2018 Nation Cup Championship
- Played GA during the 2022-2023 season with City FC
- Played DA for the San Diego Surf from 2017-2020
- Played ECNL with the San Diego Surf from 2020-2022
- Why she chose SJSU: "I chose to continue my athletic and academic career at SJSU because as soon as I stepped foot on campus, I felt a genuine sense of family, and the environment was very welcoming. After meeting the amazing coaching staff, I knew they were creating great things, and I just wanted to be a part of what they were creating. It's a tight knit community where I felt that I would be supported, and be able to perform my best at this next level."

Nikayla Sullivan / Center Back / Centennial, Colo. / Cherry Creek High School
- Named the 2021 MVP in JV Soccer
- Selected to the Colorado Rapids Regional ECNL team in 2022
- Recognized as a 5A Centennial League honorable mention in 2022
- Led her team in assists and header goals in 2022
- Served as the captain of the 2022-23 Cherry Creek Varsity team
- Why she chose SJSU: "SJSU is in my favorite area, the community is strong, the players are kind, the morals of the coaching staff fit perfectly with mine, and the campus is beautiful."
- Head Coach Tina Estrada: "Nikayla is a strong, aggressive, hard-working athlete that is very good in the air. She can play in the back or in the holding mid position. I look forward to her adding an edge to either of those positions."
Hope Northrup / Center Forward/Center Back / Elk Grove, Calif. / Monterey Trail High School
- Played for IR Academy
- Was a multi-sport star in high school, excelling in softball in addition to soccer
- Why she chose SJSU: "I chose San Jose because the campus was beautiful and they are one of the best schools for my major, which is civil engineering."
- Head Coach Tina Estrada: "Hope is a multi-sport athlete that I look forward to having in our program. Her versatility and athleticism will add tremendously next year and I look forward to seeing where she grows positionally."
Bailey Moseley / Center Back/Center Midfielder / San Jose, Calif. / Silver Creek High School
- Played three seasons of varsity soccer
- Won Team MVP in her freshman and sophomore season
- Served as team captain in her senior year
- Named to All-League First Team in her senior season
- Why she chose SJSU: I chose SJSU because of the amazing environment that both school and the soccer team allowed me to be apart of. Plus, I have the benefit of being in my hometown.
- Head Coach Tina Estrada: "I love having local talent come to SJSU. Bailey is a San Jose native that has peaked late in her development. She is a smooth, tall, technically sound defender that will do well at our program and in our conference. I look forward to her continued growth here.
