SJSU Heading to National Invitation Softball Championship Tournament

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -
The San José State Softball team has accepted an invite to the National Invitation Softball Championship (NISC), announced on Sunday. The NISC takes place from May 18-21, 2023 in Fort Collins, Colo. and is a double-elimination tournament that consists of two four-team pods. All games will be played at TC Colorado Fields at the Triple Crown Sport facility and the Spartans will open the tournament against BYU (32-16) on May 18th at 12:00 p.m. (PT) at Red Rocks Field. The championship game is scheduled for May 20th and May 21st is available for NISC games, if needed, pending weather or other unforeseen delays.

"We have added a second competitive diamond at Triple Crown in Colorado to add to the excitement that Baylor and Central Arkansas brought in 2022," said Dave King, NISC director and founder of Triple Crown Sports. "This should create one of the most unique environments in the college game."

The Spartans (26-28, 11-11 MW) come off finishing second in the first Mountain West Conference Softball Championship since 2006 after going 3-2 in the tournament including two wins over No. 1 seed Boise State and another win over No. 5 seed Fresno State.

  • SJSU's 26 total wins and 11 conference wins are both the most for SJSU since 2019
  • Jenessa Ullegue batted .333 in the MW tournament with a home run, a double and tied a career-high with four RBIs while striking out 15 in 20.2 IP
  • Ullegue pitched two 7.0 IP complete game in the MW tournament and has 388 career strikeouts which ties tying Katelyn Linford for fourth on the SJSU all-time list
  • Ullegue also pitched in every game of the MW tournament and her 16 wins this season led the Mountain West and ties her career best
  • Ullegue, Aubrie Thomas and Makenzie Hutchinson were named to the MW All-Tournament team
  • This is the Spartans first trip to the NISC and the fifth year of the tournament
  • Last season Baylor won the NISC championship
  • The Spartans had a .500 or better record against five of seven Mountain West schools this season
  • SJSU played six ranked schools this season including No. 1 Oklahoma

  • The other teams in the tournament are: BYU (32-16), Cal State-Northridge (28-22), Iowa (31-27), Maryland (36-17), South Dakota State (37-17), Tarleton State (30-27) and UC Davis (29-20)
