Lopez Ortega, Arwefjall To Compete for Individual Medalist Honors on Monday

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.— San José State women's golfers Lucia Lopez Ortega and Kajsa Arwefjäll will play for medalist honors on Monday at the NCAA Championships after both remained in the top-10 individually after the third round at the NCAA Championships at the Grayhawk Golf Club. The seventh-seeded San José State women's golf team shot a 9-over 297 and finished the day in 16th place at 18-over 882.
 

  • Lopez Ortega sits alone in second-place in the individual standings at 8-under 208 after shooting a 1-under 71 on Sunday. She is two shots behind individual leader Catherine Park of Southern California.
  • Lopez Ortega made five birdies during her round including one on 18 when her eagle putt was just short of the hole, and she tapped in for birdie.
  • She is tied for second in the field in birdies made with 14 and is one of 15 players to make at least one eagle at the championships.
  • Arwefjäll shot a 1-over 73 in the third round and is tied for ninth individually at 4-under 212. She made three birdies during her round including one on 18.
  • Lopez Ortega and Arwefjäll are looking to become the first two Spartans to finish in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships since Janice Moodie and Vibeke Stensrud did it in 1995 and 1996.

  • Rebecca Gyllner shot her best round of the championship with a 3-over 75 and finished tied for 113rd at +16.
  • Louisa Carlbom finished 145th after shooting an 85 on Sunday and for a +26 for the tournament.
  • The Spartans missed advancing to the final round of stroke play by one shot to SMU.
