Hessling, Reed Qualify for NCAA Championships as Spartans Finish Day One of West Regionals

HIGHLIGHTS

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—
Fabio Hessling and Ajamu Reed secured their spots at the NCAA Championships to lead San José State in the first day of the NCAA West First Round.

  • Reed's best mark of 7.68m (25'2.5") was the seventh-best in the Men's Long Jump. The top twelve advance to the NCAA Championships held June 8-11. Two of Reed's three jumps would have been good enough to qualify, with him jumping a distance of 7.64m (25'0.75') as well.
  • Hessling qualified with the twelfth-best mark overall in the Men's Hammer Throw of 67.99m (223'0"). The top 12 throwers advance, and so Hessling qualified for the NCAA Championships later this year.
  • Demaris Waters ran a mark of 13.88 seconds in the Men's 110m Hurdles, which was good for the nineteenth best time. The top 24 times qualify for the quarterfinal round which will be held on Saturday, where Waters will compete to go to the NCAA Championships.
  • Zaire Waring finished the Men's 400m Hurdles in 51.70 seconds and finished 24th overall to move on to the quarterfinal round on Friday. His time is also good for the sixth-fastest in school history.

UP NEXT: SJSU's women will start their events in the second day of competition on Thursday, May 25.
