Spartans Clinch Berth in 2023 MW Softball Championship, Run Rule Utah State on Friday

SAN JOSE, Calif.Adrianna Noriega hit a two-run single and Jessica Giacoma, Makenzie Hutchinson, Karizma Bergesen and Reina Zermeno all added RBI singlesto lead San José State (23-25, 11-10 MW) in a 9-0 win in five innings against Utah State (17-26, 8-13 MW) in the second of a three-game series at Spartan Softball Stadium this weekend.
 
The Spartans scored a season-high nine runs for an inning in the third inning to put the game away. The Spartans had 15 batters come up over 46 minutes to put across the nine runs.
 
The Spartans have now clinched a spot in the 2023 Mountain West Softball Championship tournament which starts May 11th at San Diego State. This is the first MW Softball Championship since 2006 and the first one the Spartans have been a part of.

  • Ullegue went 3.0 IP while letting in no runs on the way to her MW leading 14th win of the season
  • Ullegue also went 1-for-2 and scored two runs
  • Ad. Noriega also scored a run and has 21 RBIs on the season
  • Giacoma and Bergesen both went 2-for-2 while also both scoring a run
  • Hutchinson and Zermeno each had a hit and scored a run
  • Ahmiya Noriega walked, scored a run, had an RBI and has a personal season-high 10-game on-base streak
  • Ashley Rico had an RBI
  • Lacie Ham threw 2.0 IP of perfect relief
  • The Spartans have seven shutouts this season and have outscored the Aggies 11-0 through the first two games of this series
  • The Spartans have three run rule wins on the season
