ATHENS, Ga.—Antonia Malate made four birdies to finish the day tied for 13th place, and the No. 9 San José State women's golf team is tied fourth place after the first round of the NCAA Athens Regional played at the University of Georgia Golf Course.

- Malate started the day with a triple bogey on the second hole, but she held steady as she made par over six of the next seven holes and had a birdie on the eighth hole.
- She shot 2-under over her final nine holes, making three birdies, five pars and a bogey.
- Malate is one of two players who lead the field in par-3 scoring at 2-under.
- Rebecca Gyllner shot a 1-over 73 and is tied for 20th. She made three birdies during her round and finished the day with three pars and a birdie on 18. This is her second-best opening round of the season as she had a 73 in her first collegiate round at the USF Intercollegiate.
- Kajsa Arwefjäll and Lucia Lopez Ortega each shot a 3-over 75 and are tied for 30th.
- Arwefjäll made 15 pars on the day including 10 consecutive pars to end the round. She is tied for second in the field in pars made.
- Lopez Ortega made three birdies during her round and finished the round with a birdie on the 14th hole, three pars and a birdie on 18.
- Louisa Carlbom shot a 9-over 81 and is tied for 59th. She started the trio of Spartans who ended the round with a birdie on the 18th hole.
- San José State is tied for fourth with Maryland at 7-over 295. The Spartans are six shots behind third-place South Carolina and seven shots back of Ohio State. Host Georgia leads the field at 9-under 279.
- The top-five teams after the third round on Wednesday will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 19-24, at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Second round action begins Tuesday morning at 8:03 a.m. ET/5:03 a.m. PT for the Spartans. The team will play with Maryland and Ole Miss for the round.
