SJSU's McAdoo Selected by Pirates in 13th Round of MLB Draft

SEATTLE — San José State's Charles McAdoo was selected in the 13th round (377 overall) by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2023 Major League Baseball draft on Tuesday, becoming the sixth player to be drafted under head coach Brad Sanfilippo.

“Thank you to my team, my family and my coaches for helping me along the journey,” said McAdoo. “It feels really good to be a Pirate.”

With McAdoo's selection, the reigning Mountain West Champions have had a player chosen in three consecutive MLB drafts as Ruben Ibarra went in the fourth round to the Cincinnati Reds in 2021 and Brady Hill was drafted in the 15th round by the Colorado Rockies in 2022.

“The Spartan Baseball Family congratulates Charles and his family for an amazing accomplishment,” said Sanfilippo. “Charles’ impact on this program as a player and as a person will be forever lasting in this program. He has been an All-Conference player and an All-American, and has earned everything by being a selfless teammate and a tireless worker.”

McAdoo has experienced a storied three-year career with the Spartans, being named to four separate All-American/All-Region teams, receiving two All-Mountain West first-team honors and making the NCAA Stanford All-Regional Team after notching two home runs at the NCAA Regional in 2023. The junior from Antioch, Calif. holds a career batting average of .325 and has hit 24 career home runs, the third most home runs in Spartans' history. He also ranks seventh in Spartans' history in RBIs with 119 and is tied for sixth with former MLB player Kevin Frandsen for the most doubles with 43.
