Summer Baseball Notebook: Hardy Takes His Talents to Cape Cod, Three Spartans Win CCL Championship

SAN JOSE, Calif. — After a successful season in which the San José State baseball team won the Mountain West Championship and earned an NCAA Tournament bid, members of the team have not stopped their run of impressive performances this summer. Players have taken part in some of the most competitive summer baseball leagues in the country, putting up solid numbers in a field of top prospects.

Summer leagues across the country include the famed Cape Cod Baseball League, the California Collegiate League, the Northwoods League, the Independence League, and more. As summer baseball nears its conclusion, several Spartans have proven their worth.
 
 
  • Hit the game-winning home run in the third game of the opening round of the East Division playoffs
  • Played the first half of the summer with the San Luis Obispo Blues of the California Collegiate League and was named a league All-Star 
  • Helped the Prune Packers capture the CCL title and was named CCL Postseason MVP
  • In four playoff games, totaled seven hits with two home runs and six RBI in 16 at-bats
  • Hit .375 with a .460 OBP on the season

Robert Hamchuk, OF Healdsburg Prune Packers

  • Recorded a triple and came around to score in the Prune Packers championship-winning game
  • Hit .403 with a .474 OBP on the season

Gary Hall, RHP Healdsburg Prune Packers

  • Earned the save in the championship game
  • Made the second-most appearances on the team (11)

Cade Cushing, RHP Walnut Creek Crawdads

  • Played in the CCL 30 Showcase Game
  • Appeared in 10 games, allowing only three earned runs in 19.0 innings (1.42 ERA)

Northwoods League

Kimo Fukofuka, OF Rochester Honkers

  • Named a Northwoods League All-Star
  • Hit .279 with a .410 OBP on the season

Independence League

Neil Jansen, OF Fremont Moo

  • Hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning of game five of the championship series to help the Moo win the Independence League
  • Finished third on the team in home runs with five
