SJSU's Cordeiro, Talavou and Toia Named To Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Watch List

HONOLULU – San José State's Chevan Cordeiro, Marist Talavou and Soane Toia were named to the 2023 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year watch list, announced by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame on Thursday. 

The Award is presented annually to the most outstanding college football player of Polynesian ancestry that epitomizes great ability and integrity.

"This award means so much to our people, and allows us to showcase the tremendous impact that our Polynesian student-athletes are having on the game of football," said Jesse Sapolu, Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Chairman, Co-Founder and Inductee. "We look forward to following all of the players on their journey this season."

  • Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week (10/10/22, 10/03/22, 11/29/21, 11/11/19)
  • Threw for a career-high 3,251 yards and a career-high 23 touchdowns in 2022 which both were tops in the Mountain West, also ran for a career-high nine touchdowns which are most for SJSU QB in modern era
  • Threw for 366 yards with three touchdowns and ran for another against Eastern Michigan in Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (12/20/22)

  • Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll (2020, 21)
  • Had first start vs. WMU (9/24) and started in two games 
  • Played against vs. Portland St. (9/1)

Soane Toia, DL, Jr., Nuku'alosa, Tonga/Grace Bretheren HS

  • Fourth Team Phil Steele's 2023 Preseason Mountain West Team
  • Finished season with a career-high with 5.5 tackles for loss and a career-high 2.5 sacks
  • Two tackles vs. EMU in Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (12/20)
  • Three tackles at Utah State (11/19)
  • Three tackles at San Diego State (11/12)
  • Five tackles with 2.0 for loss and a sack vs. CSU (11/05)
  • Four tackles with 1.0 for loss vs. Nevada (10/29)
