WAC Preseason Coaches' Poll: Spartans Picked to Finish Second, Sweeney Named Goalkeeper of the Year

WAC ANNOUNCEMENT

ARLINGTON, Texas - David Sweeney was voted the 2023 WAC Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year while the San José State men's soccer team was picked to finish second in the 2023 WAC Men's Soccer Coaches' Poll. The 2022 runners-up in the conference, the Spartans received one first-place vote while the reigning champion Cal Baptist Lancers garnered all the other votes. Sweeney and three other Spartans, Joel Garcia, Beau Leroux, and Kasper Poulsgaard, were named to the 2023 Preseason All-WAC Team.

David Sweeney, Goalkeeper, Senior, Morgan Hill, Calif.

  • Led the conference in shutouts (eight) and save percentage (.771) in 2022
  • Named to the 2022 All-WAC Second Team 
  • Has received five WAC Defensive Player of the Week awards during his career

Joel Garcia, Defender, Senior, Salinas, Calif.

  • Scored a career-high four goals in 2022
  • Finished third on the team with 23 shots
  • Named to the All-WAC Freshman Team in 2020-21

Beau Leroux, Midfielder, Junior, San Jose, Calif.

  • Led the Spartans with seven goals in 2022
  • Named to the 2022 United Soccer Coaches All-Region Team and the All-WAC First Team
  • Earned WAC Offensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 4, 2022

Kasper Poulsgaard, Defender, Senior, Hedensted, Denmark

  • Is a two-time All-WAC recipient as he earned first-team honors in 2021 and second-team recognition in 2022
  • Named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Region Team in 2022
  • Captained the side in 2022, helping them record a WAC-leading eight shutouts
