Spartans Host Tournament This Weekend To Start 2023 Season

The San José State volleyball team begins the 2023 season at home this weekend, co-hosting the San José State/Santa Clara Tournament this Friday through Sunday at Spartan Gym inside the YUH Complex.

Tournament Schedule (Matches at SJSU only)

Friday

4:30 p.m. – Santa Clara vs. California Baptist

7:00 p.m. – San José State vs. CSUN

Saturday

11 a.m. – Santa Clara vs. Jacksonville

2 p.m. – California Baptist vs. CSUN

5 p.m. – San José State vs. Jacksonville

Sunday

4 p.m. – San José State vs. Santa Clara

Admission for all matches is free as the community is encouraged to support the Spartans this season. Spartan Gym and the YUH Complex are located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets. Paid parking is available in the West Garage, located on the corner of Fourth and San Salvador Streets.

Head Coach Todd Kress

  • The Spartans welcome new head coach Todd Kress to the campus as he begins his first season at the helm of the program.
  • Came to San José State after two coaching stints at Fairfield University where he led the program to five NCAA Tournament appearances
  • Begins his 28th year as a head coach with a 517-314 coaching record in 27 years
  • Currently 24th in the NCAA among active head volleyball coaches with 517 wins
  • Nine-time MAAC Coach of the Year

San Jose State

  • The Spartans are coming off one of the most successful seasons in 20 years with a 21-9 overall record and 14-4 Mountain West mark to finish second in the conference standings and runner-up at the MW Tournament.
  • Blaire Fleming returns as the team’s top hitter after recording 311 kills lasts season for a 2.93 per set average.
  • Jiana Lawson is the team’s top returning blocker as she averaged 1.06 blocks per set last season. Nine new Spartans join the program for the 2023 season – Laurel Barsocchini, Selin Özdemir, Mari Lawton, Elle Patterson, Jade Middleborn, Ava Roodbol, Sude Budak, Teya Nguyen and Halen Kiefer. Nayeli Ti’a will make her Spartan debut after redshirting the 2022 season.

CSUN

  • The Spartans trail in the overall series 6-8.
  • The Matadors have won the past four meetings, the last in 2010.

Jacksonville

  • The Spartans won the only meeting between the teams, 3-0, at the USF Invitational in Tampa in 2018.

Santa Clara

  • San José State has a 30-15 advantage in the overall series.
  • The Spartans have won two of the past three meetings (2017, 2021).

Up Next

The Spartans travel to the state capitol for three matches at the Hornet Invitational, September 1 & 2. The team faces Portland and Sacramento State on Friday and Cal State Fullerton Saturday.
