SAN JOSE, Calif.—Redshirt freshman Nayeli Ti’a made a dynamic debut Friday night in Spartan Gym as she led all hitters with 24 kills as the San José State volleyball team opened the 2023 season with a 3-2 win over CSUN in the San José State/Santa Clara Invitational.
- Ti’a hit .319 for the match with 47 attempts and only nine errors to go with her 24 kills.
- She also recorded her first collegiate double-double with 11 digs and had six blocks, one solo and five block assists.
- Jiana Lawson and Blaire Fleming each added 10 kills in the win.
- Lawson hit .364 on the night and led the team with eight blocks, one solo and seven assists.
- Alyssa Bjork hit .600 for the match to lead SJSU as she had nine kills on 15 attempts and no errors. She also had four block assists.
- Alessia Buffagni made her Spartan debut at libero with 13 digs, three assists and a service ace.
- Transfer Brooke Slusser made an immediate impact on the team at setter with 47 assists and 18 digs.
- Three other freshmen made their Spartan debuts Friday night – Teya Nguyen with seven digs, five assists and an ace, Laurel Barsocchini with a service ace and Sude Budak.
- Among all the debuts Friday night, Spartan head coach Todd Kress recorded his first win at the helm of the program.
The Spartans continue at home on Saturday with a match against Jacksonville beginning at 5 p.m. in Spartan Gym, on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
San José State def. CSUN – 3-2 (24-26, 25-21,25-10, 24-26, 15-6).
