Spartans Host Dons in Home Opener Thursday Night

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San José State men's soccer team (1-0-1, 0-0-0 WAC) will play its home opener at 5 p.m. on Thursday night against the University of San Francisco Dons (2-0-0, 0-0-0-0 WCC). Following the conclusion of the match, the Spartans women's soccer team will take on the UC Irvine Anteaters. Tickets for the doubleheader can be purchased here


  • The Spartans opened the 2023 season with a 1-1 draw at CSU Bakersfield and a 2-1 win at UC San Diego.
  • Angel Iniguez led the Spartans offensively in the opening week as he was involved in all three of the team's goals. The sophomore midfielder from Daly City was named the WAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week after registering one goal and two assists. 
  • Josh Redfield scored the match-winning goal at CSU Bakersfield, his first career goal. 
  • Gaku Nishimura had two assists in the match against UC San Diego.
  • Joel Garcia scored the Spartans' first goal of the season in the 1-1 draw in Bakersfield.


  • Iniguez leads the WAC in points with four (one goal and two assists).
  • Iniguez and Nishimura are tied for the conference lead in assists with two each.
  • Beau Leroux leads the conference in shots with eight.
  • David Sweeney leads the conference in goals against average at 1.00 goals per match.
  • Sweeney is also second in the conference in save percentage at .750.


  • With 17 career shutouts, Sweeney is one shutout away from tying the all-time record for clean sheets by a Spartan goalkeeper.

  • The University of San Francisco Dons have had a strong start to the season with a couple of wins.
  • They earned a 1-0 win over Utah Tech and a 2-1 victory over Detroit Mercy.

  • The Spartans and Dons tied 1-1 in their most recent matchup, on Sept. 1, 2022. Joel Garcia scored the Spartans' goal.
  • Last season, the Dons finished with an overall record of 7-6-4 but went winless in WCC conference play.
