Back safely in San Jose, the San José State volleyball team will play four non-conference matches this week in the Bay Area, starting Tuesday night at Saint Mary’s. The team the plays at the USF Challenge in San Francisco on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

San Jose State
- The Spartans enter the week with a 6-3 overall record.
- The team went 2-1 last weekend at the Campbell Invitational with wins over Campbell (3-1) and UTSA (3-1) while falling to Georgia Southern (3-0).
- Alessa Buffagni and Nayeli Ti’a were named to the all-tournament team.
Mountain West Freshman of the Week
Nayeli Ti’a was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week for her play at the Campbell Invitational.
- Averaged 3.55 kills, 3.45 digs, 0.55 aces, 0.45 assists and 4.18 points per as the Spartans went 2-1 at the Campbell Invitational
- Recorded her second double-double of the season in a 3-1 win over Campbell with 16 kills and a season-best 18 digs in the win
- Hit .371 in the match with her 16 kills in 35 attempts and only three errors and added three aces, three assists and a block
- Hit a season-best .385 in the loss to Georgia Southern with 14 kills on 26 attempts and only four errors and added nine digs and two assists
- Contributed nine kills, three aces and 11 digs in the 3-1 win over UTSA
- One of two Spartans named to the Campbell Invitational All-Tournament Team
- Second Spartan to receive this honor after Teya Nguyen was honored last week
National Rankings
- The Spartans rank 64th in the country in total blocks with 77.0.
- Jiana Lawson is 17th in total blocks with 45 and 37th in blocks per set at 1.36 ps.
Spartan Head Coach Todd Kress
- Head coach Todd Kress is in his first season at the helm of the program.
- Came to San José State after two coaching stints at Fairfield University where he led the program to five NCAA Tournament appearances
- In his 28th year as a head coach with a 523-317 coaching record in 28 years
- Currently 24th in the NCAA among active head volleyball coaches with 523 wins
- Nine-time MAAC Coach of the Year
Saint Mary’s
- The Gaels enter Tuesday night’s match with a 6-3 overall record.
- The team started the season with six consecutive wins before falling the past three matches to California (1-3), Santa Clara (1-3), and Air Force (1-3).
- San José State leads the overall series, 16-10.
- SJSU won the past two meetings the past two seasons by identical 3-1 scores.
San Francisco
- The Dons enter Thursday afternoon’s match with a 3-6 overall record.
- The team went 1-2 at the Utah Classic last weekend, defeating Tennessee State 3-2.
- The other two wins came against New Mexico (3-1) and UC Irvine (3-1).
- San José State holds a 32-7 advantage in the overall series.
- The Spartans have won the past two meeting s – 3-0 in 2021 and 3-1 in 2017.
CSUN
- The Matadors enter the weekend with a 1-7 overall record.
- The only win came at home against Fresno State, 3-0.
- This is the second meeting this season between the schools as the Matadors have an 8-7 lead in the series.
- The Spartans opened the season with a 3-2 win over CSUN inside Spartan Gym.
- Nayeli Ti’a led the team with 24 kills and added 11 digs.
UTRGV
- The Vaqueros begin the week with a 5-4 overall record and host Incarnate Word Tuesday night before traveling to the Bay Area.
- The team went 2-1 last week with two wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (3-1 & 3-2).
- San José State has a 2-1 record against UTRGV.
- Formerly known as Texas-Pan American, the Spartans won 3-0 twice in 2002 and 2012.
- SJSU lost 3-2 at the UTRGV Tournament on September 5, 2015. Tyanna Roy and Summer Avery each had 15 kills to lead the team
