LAKE ELMO, Minn.—Four Spartans started the 2023-34 by shooting under par in the first round of the season, led by Lucia Lopez Ortega who is tied for second at 5-under 67, as the San José State women’s golf team is tied for second at 11-under par after the first round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M, played at the Royal Golf Club in Minnesota.
- Lopez Ortega is tied with two others for second place with her 67.
- She made the first Spartan eagle of the season on her second hole of the day, par-4 #11 which played at 410 yards.
- Lopez Ortega finished the day with five birdies made.
- Kajsa Arwefjäll is tied for fifth at 4-under 68, after finishing her round with a clean card.
- She started the day by making seven straight pars before a birdie on #17 (started the day on #10) and then made birdies on #1, #2 and #5 before ending with four pars.
- Darae Chung and Rebecca Gyllner each shot a 1-under 71 and are tied for 19th.
- Chung, in her first tournament for the Spartans, also started her round with five consecutive pars made and had four birdies on the day.
- Gyllner also started her day with four consecutive pars made and had four birdies during the round.
- Tessa Kremser made her Spartan debut with a 4-over 76 and is tied for 53rd. She had three birdies made during the round.
- San José State is tied for second with defending national champions Wake Forest at -11, 277.
- The Spartans trail leader South Carolina by four shots.
- SJSU was one of four teams to make at least 20 birdies in the first round.
Second round action of the tournament begins Tuesday at 10:20 am CT/8:20 am PT as the Spartans will play with South Carolina and Wake Forest.
