SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Jiana Lawson started Friday by recording one of the best blocking matches in the past two years for the Spartans with 11 blocks in a 3-1 win over Portland, but the San José State volleyball team fell 3-1 in the second match of the day against Sacramento State at the Hornet Invitational inside The Nest.
San José State 3, Portland 1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-15)
- Lawson recorded a career-best 11 blocks, one solo and 10 assists and became just the 11th person in school history to record 11 blocks in a match, the 12th time it has happened in school history.
- The Spartans out blocked the Pilots 17-8 in the win with eight players recording at least one block.
- Blaire Fleming and Letizia Cammillucci each had 13 kills in the match.
- Fleming hit .611 with her 13 kills on 18 attempts and only two errors. She had a career-best seven block assists in the win.
- Teya Nguyen recorded her first collegiate double-double with 13 assists and 11 digs. She also added three service aces including the match-clinching point.
- Alessia Buffagni led the team with 14 digs and had five assists and an ace.

- She again led the team with five blocks.
- The Spartans recorded a season-high eight service aces in the match, led by Brooke Slusser and Cammillucci who had two each.
