Spartans Wrap up Non-Conference Schedule Against Sacramento State, UC Davis

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San José State men's soccer team (2-2-3, 0-0-0 WAC) will take to the road this week for two final matches before WAC conference play begins next week. The Spartans will battle Sacramento State (3-5-0, 0-0-0 Big West) on Friday, Sept. 22 and the UC Davis Aggies (2-3-2, 0-0-0 Big West) on Sunday, Sept. 24. Both contests are scheduled to start at 4 p.m. and can be viewed on ESPN+


  • The Spartans earned four points last week with a 1-1 draw against Pacific and a 3-1 win over Santa Clara.
  • Riccardo Scarafia scored his first goal of the season and David Sweeney recorded five saves in the match against Pacific.
  • Gaku Nishimura led the Spartans with two penalty-kick goals while Angel Iniguez netted his team-leading third goal of the year in the match against Santa Clara.


  • The Spartans rank third in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in assists this season with 10.
  • Iniguez leads the WAC in assists with three and is third in the conference in points with nine.
  • Nishimura is tied for fourth in the conference in assists with two.
  • The Spartans have the fourth-best attendance average in the WAC, averaging 994 fans per home match.
  • Iniguez was named the WAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 29.


  • With 17 career shutouts, Sweeney is one shutout away from tying the all-time record for clean sheets by a Spartan goalkeeper.

  • The Sacramento State Hornets are 3-5-0 this season and are coming off a 1-0 loss to San Francisco on Sunday night.
  • The Spartans have a 32-22-4 all-time record against the Hornets. However, they have not defeated Sacramento State in the previous three meetings, going back to 2018.
  • On Aug. 28, 2022, the Spartans lost 2-1 to the Hornets in Sacramento. Diego Delgadillo came off the bench to score the only goal for SJSU.


  • The UC Davis Aggies are 2-3-2 this season and are coming off a 1-0 loss to Saint Mary's on Sunday.
  • The Spartans have a 14-10-2 all-time record against the Aggies and have won the previous two meetings, 5-2 in 2021 and 3-2 in 2022.
  • In the 2022 matchup, Scarafia, Beau Leroux and Joel Garcia each scored a goal while Iniguez recorded an assist.
