Spartans Open Conference Play at Home Versus Air Force, Utah Valley

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San José State men's soccer team (3-3-3, 0-0-0 WAC) will begin WAC conference play this week with matchups against the Air Force Falcons (0-8-1, 0-0-0 WAC) and the Utah Valley Wolverines (1-4-3, 0-0-0 WAC). Both matches will take place at the Spartan Soccer Complex with the Spartans taking on the Falcons Thursday night and the Wolverines Sunday afternoon. Kickoff on Thursday is scheduled for 7 p.m. while Sunday's match will start at 1 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here.


  • The Spartans earned a 4-1 win over Sacramento State on Friday night and a 3-0 loss at UC Davis on Sunday.
  • Seven Spartans recorded at least one point against Sacramento State with Angel Iniguez leading the way with one goal and two assists.
  • Several Spartans got the day off against UC Davis, including goalkeeper David Sweeney as Ronin Axelson and Charlie Dyer made their Spartan debuts.


  • The Spartans lead the WAC in assists this season with 18 and are tied for the most goals with 13.
  • The Spartans have the top two assist producers in the conference as Iniguez leads the conference with five and Gaku Nishimura sits right behind him with four.
  • Iniguez is third in the conference in points with 13 and Nishimura is fifth with eight.
  • The Spartans have the fourth-best attendance average in the WAC, averaging 994 fans per home match.
  • Iniguez was named the WAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 29.


  • With 17 career shutouts, Sweeney is one shutout away from tying the all-time record for clean sheets by a Spartan goalkeeper.

  • The Air Force Falcons are 0-8-1 this season and are coming off a 2-2 draw versus San Francisco on Saturday.
  • In 2022, the Falcons won the WAC regular-season title but were eliminated in the tournament semifinal by California Baptist, 2-0.
  • The Spartans have a 24-13-7 all-time record against the Falcons.
  • The two sides played to a 1-1 draw in their last meeting, on Oct. 28, 2022. 
  • Joel Garcia Jr. scored for the Spartans in the draw.


  • The Utah Valley Wolverines are 1-4-3 this season and are coming off a 0-0 draw to Mercer on Saturday.
  • In 2022, the Wolverines finished fourth in the conference regular-season standings and lost in the first round of the tournament to California Baptist. 
  • The Spartans have a 6-3-1 all-time record over the Wolverines, having won the previous six meetings.
  • Sweeney has made 29 career saves against the Wolverines and earned shutouts in three of his five starts against them.
