Spartans Travel to Campbell Invitational For Three Matches This Weekend

The San José State volleyball team traveled across the country this week to Buies Creek, N.C., for the Campbell Invitational this Friday and Saturday. The Spartans will face Campbell, Georgia Southern and UTSA over the two days.

Friday

San Jose State

  • The Spartans enter the weekend with a 4-2 overall record.
  • The team went 2-1 last weekend at the Hornet Invitational with wins over Portland (3-1) and Cal State Fullerton (3-0).
  • Jiana Lawson and Blaire Fleming were named to the all-tournament team.
  • Lawson averaged 1.82 blocks, 1.64 kills and 2.77 points per set and hit .459 for the week.
  • She became the 11th Spartan in school history to record 11 blocks in a match. She accomplished that feat against her former school Portland.
  • Fleming averaged 3.91 kills and 0.73 blocks per set and recorded double-digit kills in all three matches.

Mountain West Freshman of the Week

  • Teya Nguyen was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week for her play at the Hornet Invitational.
  • Averaged 3.45 assists, 2.09 digs and 0.55 aces per set
  • Saw time at both setter and defensive specialist
  • Recorded her first collegiate double-double with 13 assists and 11 digs in a four-set win over Portland

National Rankings

  • The Spartans rank 46th in the country in blocks per set at 2.50 ps.
  • Jiana Lawson is 29th in blocks per set at 1.45 ps, and 23rd in total blocks with 32.

Spartan Head Coach Todd Kress

  • Head coach Todd Kress begins his first season at the helm of the program.
  • Came to San José State after two coaching stints at Fairfield University where he led the program to five NCAA Tournament appearances
  • In his 28th year as a head coach with a 521-316 coaching record in 28 years
  • Currently 24th in the NCAA among active head volleyball coaches with 521 wins
  • Nine-time MAAC Coach of the Year

Campbell

  • The Camels are 2-5 on the season but enter Friday on a two-match winning streak with victories over Bethune Cookman (3-0) and NC Central (3-2).
  • San José State lost in five sets to Campbell in the only meeting in the series in 2013. The teams played at the Tribe Invitational hosted by William & Mary. In the match, former Spartan Hanah Blume recorded 35 digs and 13 kills in the match and was named to the all-tournament team.

Georgia Southern

  • The Eagles are the only undefeated team in the tournament with a 5-0 record.
  • This is the first meeting between the two teams.

UTSA

  • The Roadrunners enter the weekend with a 4-2 overall record.
  • The Spartans trail in the overall series, 3-2.
  • The two teams were members of the Western Athletic Conference for the 2012, which is when UTSA won three times that year including the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

San José State returns to the Bay Area for four non-conference matches next week. The team plays at Saint Mary’s on Tuesday, September 12, followed by three matches at the USF Challenge in San Francisco. The team plays host USF on Thursday, CSUN on Friday and UTRGV on Saturday.
