Spartans Shine In Singles On Day One Of Saint Mary's Fall Invite

MORAGA, Calif. – Irena Muradyan, Duru Durgun and Jovana Babic each won their first two singles matches to kick off the Saint Mary's Fall Invite on Friday to lead San José State in its final tournament of the fall.

  • Muradyan didn't drop a set in either of her two singles matches to start, knocking off Santa Clara's Finley Kalinic 6-2, 6-2 in the first round, followed by a 6-4, 6-2 win over Romane Mosse out of Cal Poly to advance to the quarterfinals in the blue draw.
  • Babic also won both her matches in straight sets, taking out Sarah MacCallum from Cal Poly 6-0, 6-3, before beating Alicia Yue from USF 6-4, 6-4 to move to the quarterfinals of the red draw.
  • Durgun earned a bye in the first round of the red draw before knocking off Qianer Qiu from USF 6-1, 6-1 to also advance to the quarterfinals.
  • The Spartans also had a pair of doubles wins, starting with a 6-2 win by Durgun and Adriana Jimenez over their opponents from Santa Clara in the red draw.
  • Muradyan and Cheuk Ying Shek earned a win in the blue draw, also beating their opponents from Santa Clara 6-2.
  • Rozalina Youseva earned a win in the first round of singles in the blue draw, defeating Melissa LeMette from Cal Poly 6-1, 6-2.
  • Jimenez also earned a singles win in the first round of the red draw, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Erica Hellbe from the Academy of Art.
