Spartans Play at UNLV, Utah Tech This Week

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San José State men's soccer team (4-3-4, 1-0-1 WAC) will battle the UNLV Rebels (2-5-2, 0-1-0 WAC) in Las Vegas and the Utah Tech Trailblazers (5-4-0, 1-1-0 WAC) in St. George, Utah this week. The Spartans will take on the Rebels on Thursday night at 7 p.m. and the Trailblazers on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. MT/12:30 p.m. PT. Both matches can be viewed on WAC International.


  • The Spartans took four points in the opening week of conference play, winning 1-0 over Air Force and drawing 1-1 to Utah Valley.
  • In the win over Air Force, Josh Lucas scored his first career goal while Joel Garcia Jr. got the assist.
  • In the draw against Utah Valley, Angel Iniguez collected his team-high fifth goal of the season. Isaac Lomeli and Emiliano Corona grabbed the assists.

  • The Spartans lead the WAC in assists this season with 21.
  • They are tied for third for goals with 15.
  • The Spartans have two of the top assist producers in the conference as Iniguez leads the WAC with five and Gaku Nishimura is tied for third with four.

  • With 18 career shutouts, David Sweeney is tied with Chris Humphreys (1997-2000) and Gary St. Clair (1970-74) for most career clean sheets by a Spartan goalkeeper.
  • With 251 career saves, Sweeney is two saves away from tying the all-time record for career saves by a Spartan goalkeeper, set by Keith Bateman (1992-95).


  • The UNLV Rebels are 2-5-2 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference.
  • The Rebels only conference match was a 3-2 defeat to UTRGV on Thursday, Sept. 28.
  • In 2022, the Spartans won 3-1 over the Rebels. Beau Leroux scored two goals while Anthony Guzman produced the third off the bench.
  • The Spartans have a 17-28-6 all-time record against the Rebels but have won the previous three meetings, two of which were Spartan shutouts (1-0 in 2020-2021 and 2-0 in 2021).

  • The Trailblazers only conference match was a 1-0 win over UTRGV on Sunday, Oct. 1.
  • In 2022, the Spartans won 2-0 over the Trailblazers. Lomeli and Iniguez led the Spartans in the match as Lomeli collected two assists and Iniguez scored a goal.
  • The Spartans have never lost against the Trailblazers, holding a 3-0-0 all-time record with two shutouts against the school formerly known as Dixie State.
