Coming off one of the most successful seasons in school history, the San José State men’s basketball team begins the 2023-24 season at home this Tuesday with a non-conference game against UC Irvine. The two teams faced each other numerous times in the 1980s and 90s when the schools were members of the Big West Conference.
San José State is coming off a 20-win season in 2022-23 when the team finished 21-14 and played in the quarterfinals of the CBI. Head coach Tim Miles begins his third season at the helm of the program after being named the 2022-23 Mountain West Steve Fisher Coach of the Year. The Spartans return two starters from that team - Alvaro Cardenas and Trey Anderson. Nine newcomers join the program this year, led by Washington State transfer Adrame Diongue and junior college transfer William Humer.
ABOUT UC IRVINE: The Anteaters finished the 2022-23 season with a 23-12 overall record and 15-5 record in Big West play. The co-regular season 2022-23 Big West champion, UCI is picked fourth in this year’s Big West Preseason Poll. The Anteaters fell to Cal State Fullerton 83-80 in the BW Tournament semifinals and lost at Oregon, 84-58 in the first round of the NIT. Head coach Russell Turner enters his 14th year at the school with a 265-170 record.
