BOX SCORE (PDF)

FARGO, N.D. - Alvaro Cardenas registered a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the San José State men's basketball team (5-5, 0-0 MW) in an 83-78 overtime loss to North Dakota State (5-4, 0-0 Summit League) on Monday night.

  • The Spartans trailed by eight at halftime but exploded for 44 points in the second half to force an extra five minutes.
  • The halftime deficit would have been greater had the Spartans not gone on a 7-0 run in the final 1:23 of the opening half.
  • SJSU quickly tied the game in the second half, getting out to a 12-4 run in the first three minutes of the second frame.
  • The Spartans nearly pulled off the win in regulation as Myron (MJ) Amey Jr. completed a three-point play down two with six seconds left in the second half. However, NDSU's Damari Wheeler-Thomas was fouled shortly after and made one of two free-throws to tie the game.
  • For Cardenas, the double-double was the first of his career and it was his second time scoring more than 20 points this season. He had a career-high 23 points against Hampton on Nov. 20, 2023.
  • Cardenas and Amey Jr. each led the Spartans with four assists.
  • One of Cardenas' four assists was this highlight-worthy lob to Adrame Diongue
  • Diongue matched his career high of nine points and also recorded a block for the ninth straight game.
  • Amey Jr. and Tibet Görener joined Cardenas in double figures with 15 and 13 points respectively.
  • Rickey Mitchell Jr. tied his career high as he scored eight points for the second straight game.
