Spartans Set for Conference Opener at Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. - The San José State men's basketball team (7-6, 0-0 Mountain West) will battle the Wyoming Cowboys (7-6, 0-0 Mountain West) inside Arena-Auditorium on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at 6:30 p.m. MT/5:30 p.m. PT. Watch the contest on the Mountain West Network or listen on KTRB 860 AM.

  • The Spartans have not played since Dec. 20 when they won 81-78 over Santa Clara.
  • In the victory, the Spartans were led by Myron (MJ) Amey Jr. and Alvaro Cardenas. Amey Jr. registered 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists, four steals and one block while Cardenas produced a double-double of 14 points and 10 assists.
  • Five Spartans scored in double figures in the win as in addition to Amey Jr. and Cardenas, Latrell Davis, Tibet Görener and Adrame Diongue tallied 12, 12 and 10 points respectively. 
  • It was the second straight game in which the Spartans finished with five or more scorers in double figures; they had six in a loss to Montana on Dec. 17.
  • Cardenas has produced a double-double in three of the previous four games with 22 points and 10 rebounds at North Dakota State, 16 points and 10 assists against New Orleans, and 14 points and 10 assists versus Santa Clara.
  • Görener is fourth all-time for most 3-pointers made at SJSU with 137. The junior forward is one 3-pointer away from tying Adrian Oliver (2009-11) for third. Görener is also third in 3-pointers attempted with 416; Ryan Welage (2015-18) is second in attempts with 417.
  • Trey Anderson ranks fourth in school history in 3-point percentage (among players who have played in at least 50 games and averaged one or more 3-point attempts per game). His career mark from beyond the arc is 42.1 percent, connecting on 106 of 252 attempts.
  • Cardenas is seventh all-time for most career assists at SJSU with 275. Marmet Williams (1994-98) is sixth with 318.
  • This season, Cardenas ranks in the top 30 in the country for most assists per game, averaging 5.7.
  • The Spartans lead the Mountain West Conference in 3-pointers made per game at 8.85.
  • Diongue has recorded at least one block in 11 straight games. He has played in 12 of the 13 contests this season and the only game of the 13 in which he did not register a block was the season opener against UC Irvine.

VS. WYOMING

  • The Cowboys are 7-6 this season and coming off a 94-68 loss at No. 12 BYU on Saturday.
  • The Spartans are 3-20 all-time against the Cowboys but won the most recent meeting, 84-64, on Feb. 4, 2023.
  • In the victory, the Spartans shot 56.6 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range (11-for-22) while Cardenas (13 points) and Anderson (10 points) were two of five Spartans to score in double figures.
