SAN JOSE, Calif. - Alvaro Cardenas registered 21 points and Myron (MJ) Amey Jr. added 20 to lead the San José State men's basketball team (7-9, 0-3 MW) in an 81-78 loss to No. 19 San Diego State (14-2, 3-0 MW) on Tuesday night.
- The Spartans went toe-to-toe against the reigning national runners-up as there were 15 lead changes throughout the game.
- SJSU had the chance to tie the contest, down two with two seconds left, but a layup attempt by Trey Anderson was blocked by San Diego State's Jay Pal.
- In addition to Cardenas and Amey Jr., two other Spartans scored in double figures as Tibet Görener and Anderson recorded 15 and 11 points.
- The Spartans had two players score more than 20 or more points in a game for the first time since Omari Moore and Sage Tolbert netted 26 and 20 points against Nevada on March 9, 2023.
- Amey Jr. made a career-high eight free throws, connecting on all eight of his attempts.
- As a team, the Spartans produced season highs in both free throws made (23) and free-throw percentage (92 percent).
- Cardenas dished out a game-high six assists.
