Spartans Play at Air Force Saturday Night

USAFA, Colo. - The San José State men's basketball team (7-9, 0-3 Mountain West) will take on the Air Force Falcons (7-7, 0-2 Mountain West)  in Colorado on Saturday night. WILD FINISH AGAINST NO. 19 SAN DIEGO STATE 

  • The Spartans are coming off an 81-78 loss to No. 19 San Diego State on Tuesday night.
  • SJSU went toe-to-toe against the reigning national runners-up as there were 15 lead changes throughout the game.
  • The Spartans had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds but a layup attempt by Trey Anderson was blocked by the Aztecs’ Jay Pal. 
  • Alvaro Cardenas and Myron (MJ) Amey Jr. led the Spartans with 21 and 20 points respectively.
  • As a team, the Spartans produced season highs in both free throws made (23) and free-throw percentage (92 percent).

SEASON SUMMARY

  • Amey Jr. leads the Spartans in scoring this season, averaging 15.3 points per game. The junior guard has scored 20-plus points in back-to-back games with a season-high 30 against Boise State and 20 against San Diego State.
  • Cardenas has recorded a double-double in three of the previous seven games with 22 points, 10 rebounds at North Dakota State; 16 points, 10 assists against New Orleans; and 14 points, 10 assists versus Santa Clara.
  • Adrame Diongue is second in the conference in blocks per game at 1.60, behind only UNLV’s Kalib Boone who averages 1.69.
  • Cardenas ranks 28th and 21st in Division I in assists per game (5.7) and assist/turnover ratio (3.25). In the conference, he is fifth and second in the two categories.
  • The Spartans lead the Mountain West Conference in 3-pointers made per game at 8.94.
  • Despite their 0-3 record in conference play, the Spartans have led for 73:47 out of the total 120 minutes.

CLIMBING UP THE RECORD BOOKS

  • Tibet Görener is third all-time for most 3-pointers made at SJSU with 145 and is eight away from tying Tim Pierce (2007-09) for second.
  • Görener is second in 3-pointers attempted with 435; Pierce is first in attempts with 471.
  • Anderson ranks fourth in school history in 3-point percentage (among players who have played in at least 50 games and averaged one or more 3-point attempts per game). His career mark from beyond the arc is 40 percent, connecting on 107 of 265 attempts.
  • Cardenas ranks seventh all-time for most career assists at SJSU with 292. Marmet Williams (1994-98) is sixth with 318.

VS. AIR FORCE

  • The Air Force Falcons have started Mountain West Conference play with losses against Utah State and Nevada
  • The Spartans have an 11-13 all-time record against the Falcons.
  • The Spartans won the previous two meetings, both in the 2022-23 season.
  • Last year, at Air Force, the Spartans overcame a 20-point second-half deficit to earn a 63-61 win. Omari Moore provided the game-saving block at the end of the game.
  • Cardenas scored in double figures in both contests against Air Force last season.
