Spartans Head to Fresno to Battle the Bulldogs

FRESNO, Calif. - The San José State men's basketball team (8-9, 1-3 MW) will play the Fresno State Bulldogs (7-9, 0-3 MW) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16 on the Mountain West Network and KTRB 860 AM

AMEY JR. WINS IT AT THE BUZZER

  • The Spartans are coming off a 70-67 win over Air Force on Saturday night.
  • Myron (MJ) Amey Jr. made a 3-pointer from the corner as time expired to give the Spartans the victory.
  • Amey Jr. led the Spartans with 16 points and nine rebounds.
  • Alvaro Cardenas contributed 11 points and nine assists.
  • Tibet Görener produced 15 points.

SEASON SUMMARY

  • Three of the four conference games for SJSU have been decided by three points or fewer. SJSU lost at Wyoming on a last-second shot, fell by only three to No. 19 San Diego State and won at the buzzer at Air Force. The Spartans have yet to play a conference game where the winning team won by more than 10 points.
  • The Spartans have led for 108 out of the total 160 minutes during Mountain West conference play and were up at halftime in three of the four games. 
  • The Spartans lead the Mountain West Conference in 3-pointers made per game at 8.94.
  • Adrame Diongue is third in the conference in blocks per game (1.63 bpg) as he has registered 26 blocks in 16 games. In conference games, he has averaged a conference-leading 2.50 blocks per contest.
  • Cardenas has recorded a double-double in three of the previous eight games with 22 points, 10 rebounds at North Dakota State; 16 points, 10 assists against New Orleans; and 14 points, 10 assists versus Santa Clara.
  • Cardenas ranks 11th and 25th in Division I in assist/turnover ratio (3.57) and assists per game (5.9). In the conference, he is second and fifth in the two categories.

RECORD WATCH

  • Görener is third all-time for most 3-pointers made at SJSU with 147 and is six away from tying Tim Pierce (2007-09) for second.
  • Görener is second in 3-pointers attempted with 437; Pierce is first in attempts with 471.
  • Trey Anderson ranks fourth in school history in 3-point percentage (among players who have played in at least 50 games and averaged one or more 3-point attempts per game). His career mark from beyond the arc is 40.6 percent, connecting on 108 of 266 attempts. 
  • Cardenas ranks seventh all-time for most career assists at SJSU with 301; Marmet Williams (1994-98) is sixth with 318.

VS. FRESNO STATE 

  • The Fresno State Bulldogs are coming off a buzzer-beater loss at Wyoming on Saturday.
  • The Bulldogs' three conference losses have come against San Diego State, Nevada and Wyoming. 
  • The Spartans are 82-100 all-time against the Bulldogs.
  • In the 2022-23 season, the Spartans went 1-1 against the Bulldogs, winning at home but falling on the road.
  • Cardenas led the Spartans in the victory at home, scoring 20 points and dishing out nine assists.
