RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Freshman Cheuk Ying Shek won both her singles and doubles match to lead the San José State women's tennis team (1-0, 0-0 MW) to a 6-1 victory over UC Riverside (0-3, 0-0 Big West) on Tuesday afternoon.
- Ying Shek and another Spartan freshman, Duru Durgun, picked up their first career wins.
- Ying Shek registered the victory on court two, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) and Durgun recorded the win on court five, 6-3, 6-2.
- In total, the Spartans won five singles matches in straight sets.
- Rozalina Youseva was the first Spartan to win handily as she took home a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court four.
- Jovana Babic wrapped up shortly after on court six, winning 6-1, 6-0.
- Carolina Millan played on court one and won her match, 6-2, 6-2.
- The Spartans took the doubles point thanks to set victories by the pairings of Ying Shek and Irena Muradyan, and Millan and Babic.
UP NEXT: The Spartans will play their home opener on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 12 p.m. against Sacramento State.
