SAN DIEGO – The 2024 San José State Spartan baseball team is set to begin its 2024 campaign this weekend against the UC San Diego Tritons Friday-Sunday as they look to defend their 2023 Mountain West regular season and tournament titles.
Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., with game times on Friday and Saturday being scheduled for 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
POTENTIAL PITCHING MATCHUPS:
- Friday: Ethan Ross vs. Ryan Forcucci
- Saturday: Micky Thompson vs. Zack Ernisse
- Sunday: Michael Rice vs. Matthew Dalquist
SAN JOSÉ STATE:
- Theo Hardy, Hunter Dorraugh, Robert Hamchuk and Micky Thompson were named to the Preseason All-Mountain West Team.
- The Spartans had the most athletes (4) on the Preseason All-MW Team.
- The Spartans were picked to finish first in the Mountain West Preseason Coaches' Poll, receiving four first-place votes.
- SJSU is coming off a 2023 season where they won both the Mountain West regular season and tournament championships.
- They earned a spot in the NCAA Stanford Regional where they were the No. 4 seed along with Stanford, Texas A&M and Cal State Fullerton.
- Head coach Brad Sanfilippo was named the 2023 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year.
- The Spartans are projected to be in the field of 64 by DIBaseball.
UC SAN DIEGO:
- The Tritons are coming off a 34-18 season, 21-9 in the Big West Conference.
- The Tritons won their first Big West Championship in 2023.
- This is the first matchup between the Spartans and UC San Diego.
2024 SCHEDULE:
- The Spartans play five home games in the month of February, while also going on the road with a single-game matchup at Stanford.
- The Spartans open Mountain West play with a three-game series at UNLV March 1-3.
- They have three single-game non-conference matchups at Saint Mary's, at San Francisco and at Santa Clara before closing the month of March with a three-game series at UC Santa Barbara March 28-30.
- In April, the Spartans travel to take on No. 3 Arkansas on April 9-10.
- In the final month of the regular season, the Spartans open with three games at Air Force May 3-5 before a single game at San Francisco May 7 and a three-game set at Cal May 10-12.
- The Spartans close the regular season at home against New Mexico on May 16-18.
- The Mountain West Tournament is slated for May 23-26 in San Diego.
UP NEXT: The Spartans will have their first game at Excite Ballpark on Monday when they take on Cal State Fullerton at 2:05 p.m. in a Stanford Regional rematch.
