Zermeno Leads Spartans in SVC I Sweep and Fifth Straight Win

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Reina Zermeno hit a three-run home run, Aubrie Thomas went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Shay McDowell had three RBIs to lead San José State (5-4, 0-0 MW) softball in a 9-7 win over Portland State (1-8, 0-0 Big Sky) as the Spartans sweep the Silicon Valley Classic I and have won five in a row.

The Spartans put four across in the bottom of the sixth inning as McDowell hit a two RBI single to give the Spartans an 8-7 lead they wouldn't relinquish. Zermeno gave the Spartans their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third with her first home run of the season.

Lacie Ham came in and pitched the final 1.2 innings while only letting up one hit and no runs for her third win of the season.

  • It is the first sweep for the Spartans in the SVC since 2022.
  • The Spartans matched their longest win streak from a season ago with five straight wins.
  • For Zermeno, her three RBIs tied a career high and she ended the day 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
  • Zermeno ended the SVC I batting .545 with a 1.000 slugging pct. and a .615 on-base pct.
  • Zermeno also had one home run, one triple, five RBIs, six hits, four runs scored and didn't strikeout in 11 at-bats.
  • McDowell's three RBIs are a career high and she went 2-for-4 in the win.
  • McDowell had five RBIs during the SVC I.
  • For Thomas, her three hits are a career high and she hit her second double of the season.
  • Thomas also stole two bases and has three stolen bases on the season.
  • Thomas hit .500 with two doubles, five hits, seven runs scored, two RBIs and a .700 slugging pct. in the four games of the SVC I.
  • Thomas, Zermeno and McDowell hit two, three, four in the lineup and combined went 6-for-10 with eight RBIs and five runs scored in the game.
  • Taylor Squires hit her first double of the season and went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
  • Ashley Rico also went 2-for-4.
  • Aneesa Almaguer hit an RBI single.
  • Ham in the SVC I pitched 12.1 innings with a 0.57 ERA and earned two victories while striking out seven.
