SJSU Looks for Sixth Straight Win Heading to Judi Garman Classic

SAN JOSE, Calif. - San José State softball (5-4, 0-0 Mountain West) heads to the Judi Garman Classic this weekend in Fullerton, Calif. looking for their sixth straight win and will Long Beach State (1-13, 0-0 Big West), Oregon State (6-10, 0-0 Pac-12), Weber State (8-7, 0-0 Big Sky), DePaul (3-11, 0-0 Big East) and No. 18 UCLA (7-5, 0-0 Pac-12) from Anderson Family Field on the campus of Cal State Fullerton.

SCHEDULE

  • Game 1: Friday, 12:30 p.m. vs. Long Beach State
  • Game 2: Saturday, 3:00 p.m. vs. Oregon State
  • Game 3: Saturday, 5:30 p.m. vs. Weber State
  • Game 4: Sunday, 9:00 a.m. vs. DePaul
  • Game 5: Sunday, 1:30 p.m. vs. No. 18 UCLA

NEWS AND NOTES

  • In 2023, the Spartans went to the Mountain West Championship game and had 27 total wins which included 11 conference wins which were the most for SJSU since 2019.
  • Also in 2023, the Spartans played in the NISC postseason tournament for the first time and the first postseason appearance for the Spartans since 2017.
  • Lacie Ham in the SVC I (02/16-18) pitched 12.1 innings with a 0.57 ERA and earned two victories while striking out seven earning her Mountain West Pitcher of the Week honors (02/19) for the first time in her career.
  • Reina Zermeno ended the SVC I batting .545 with a 1.000 slugging pct. and a .615 on-base pct. Zermeno also had one home run, one triple, five RBIs, six hits, four runs scored and didn't strikeout in 11 at-bats in the SVC I (02/16-18).
  • Zermeno leads the Spartans and is ninth in the MW with a .417 batting average and has only struck out one time in 24 at-bats this season.
  • Oregon State transfer Shay McDowell impressed during the NorCal Kickoff hitting .455 with five hits, two doubles, one home run, one run scored, three RBIs, 10 total bases and had a slugging pct. of .909.
  • Taylor Squires hit her first career triple in the win against Middle Tennessee State (2/11). Squires ended up scoring the second run of the game in the Spartans 3-2 win.
  • The Spartans go into the season with two sets of sisters. Adrianna and Ahmiya Noriega return after putting up big numbers in their first season together in 2023. Joining Aubrie Thomas this season is her sister Korie who is a graduate transfer from UCSB.
  • Ah. Noriega leads the Mountain West with two triples this season.
  • The Thomas' have longstanding ties with SJSU. Their father Shawn played defensive back for the Spartans football team and their mother Sarah was a catcher on the softball team.
