COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The San José State baseball team was voted the top-ranked team in the Mountain West entering the 2024 campaign, the league announced Thursday. The Spartans will be looking to retain their Mountain West regular season and tournament championships from 2023.

Theo Hardy, Hunter Dorraugh, Robert Hamchuk and Micky Thompson were also named to the Preseason All-Mountain West Team. The four Spartans chosen are the most in the Mountain West.

#1 Theo Hardy

  • Appeared in and started all 58 games
  • Led the Spartans with a .329 batting average and a .426 on-base percentage
  • Recorded 97 RBIs, 12 doubles, two home runs and was second on the team with four triples
  • Named to the All-Mountain West First Team
  • Hit 8-for-20 (.400) across five games in the Mountain West Championship
  • Scored three runs against San Francisco (May 9)
  • Tallied three hits including a triple and three RBIs against Cal Poly (Feb. 20)
  • Recorded two RBIs on three hits against Santa Clara (March 27)
  • Scored twice on three hits including a double against New Mexico (April 7)
  • Submitted three RBIs against New Mexico (April 8)
  • Notched a season-high four hits against UNLV (April 14)

#7 Hunter Dorraugh

  • Tallied a .324 batting average with an on-base percentage of .418
  • Registered 10 home runs and 47 RBIs
  • Hit 10-for-22 (.455) with a championship-leading three home runs in the Mountain West Championship
  • Named to the MW All-Tournament Team
  • Named the MW Player of the Week (Feb. 20)
  • Recorded two doubles against LMU (Feb. 17)
  • Submitted four hits including a double and a home run to drive in three RBIs against LMU (Feb. 19)
  • Had three RBIs on a double and another base hit against Fresno State (March 4)
  • Notched three RBIs against USF (March 7)
  • Hit a walk-off single to clinch the series win over the Saint Louis Billikens (March 26)
  • Tallied three hits and an RBI against New Mexico (April 8)
  • Scored three runs, tallied three hits and three RBIs against Fresno State (April 23)

#23 Robert Hamchuk

  • Hit 11-for-22 (.500) in five games in the Mountain West Championship, scoring six runs, producing three doubles and two home runs and driving in seven RBIs. 
  • Recorded two doubles and another base hit for two RBIs against Cal Poly (Feb. 20)
  • Had three hits including two doubles and three RBIs while scoring twice himself against USF (March 7)
  • Submitted a three hit, one RBI and one run performance against San Diego State (March 10)
  • Scored twice and had three hits against Saint Louis (March 25)
  • Notched three RBIs on two hits against Nevada (April 1)
  • Scored three times and had two hits against New Mexico (April 8)
  • Had three RBIs on two hits and scored twice against UNLV (April 15)
  • Named the Mountain West Player of the Week (March 13)

#32 Micky Thompson

  • Appeared in 16 games
  • Tossed 79.0 innings, allowing only 85 hits and an opposing batting average of .253
  • Finished the year with a 4.44 ERA and was named to the all-conference second team
  • Recorded 59 strikeouts
  • Allowed five or more runs in a game only once in his first nine starts of the season, pitching at least 5.0 innings in every one 
  • Tossed a career-high 8.0 innings, giving up only two earned runs while striking out six in a win over New Mexico (April 7)
  • Pitched 6.0 scoreless innings, earning the win over Fresno State (March 4)
  • Recorded six strikeouts in three of his first nine games
  • Pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings at the NCAA Stanford Regional
  • Threw 4.1 innings against Air Force at the Mountain West Tournament, surrendering only three runs on five hits

The Spartans will begin their 2024 season on Feb. 16-18 with a three-game series at UC San Diego.
